Iran's President Writes to US President Bush
By Safa Haeri, Posted Monday, May 8, 2006
"President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nezhad went down into history when he created yet another surprise by writing a letter to his American counterpart George W. Bush.
This is the first time in the 27 years life of the Islamic Republic that a president is writing directly to an American leader.
The letter reviews international developments and crisis, an analysis of the world’s situation and offers new ways and means to solve them“The letter of Mr. Ahmadi Nezhad to Mr. Bush was handed over to the Swiss Ambassador in Tehran, who is in charge of American interests”, Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced.
“The letter reviews international developments and crisis, an analysis of the world’s situation and offers new ways and means to solve them”, the Minister said without giving more details.
The White House said it was unaware of any letter from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte said the move may have been timed to influence a UN Security Council debate on Iran.
The news of the dramatic move was disclosed first on Monday morning by Mr. Qolamhoseyn Elham, the Government’s official spokesman, stopping short of giving more details about the unprecedented letter.
“It immediately exploded like a nuclear bomb, as the issue of Iranian nuclear activities is now one of the world’s most urgent problems”, an Iranian journalist told Iran Press Service.
This is a dramatic turn in the history of the Islamic Republic, as it could not be written without the prior authorization from the leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i”, the journalist added.
“It also shows that the Iranian leader feels their regime is solid enough to address directly the United States from a position of strength”, he stressed further.
“The letter of Iranian President to his American counterpart can pave the way for new diplomatic initiatives, but it does not mean a softening of Iranian position concerning Washington”, the French news agency AFP quoted Mr. Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council on National Security and the regime’s top nuclear negotiator as having said.
The missive was written at a time that the United Nations Security Council is debating on the ways of stopping Iran from nuclear activities that the US and Israel suspects hides programmes aiming at the production of nuclear arms.
While Washington, backed cautiously by its three main European allies, mainly Britain, France and Germany pushes for stiff sanctions, Russia and China, other two veto holders at the Security Council are against."
