Yasir Arafat

Arafat's Health Reported to Improve
By GREG MYRE, in The New York Times

Yasir Arafat has led the Palestinians for nearly four decades.

"JERUSALEM, Oct. 28 - Additional doctors were arriving from Arab countries to treat the ailing Yasir Arafat at his West Bank compound today, though associates said his condition was stable and he was well enough to attend Muslim prayers.

Mr. Arafat, who has been confined to the compound for close to three years, has been ill for the past two weeks, and his condition took a turn for the worse on Wednesday night amid reports that he briefly collapsed.

An ambulance and key members of the Palestinian leadership were summoned to his headquarters and his wife, Suha, who lives in Paris, was due to arrive.

Mr. Arafat's aides have provided only sketchy details of his illness, saying he is weak with a bad case of stomach flu. He has had persistent vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains. In recent days, there have been frequent reports and rumors that he is suffering from something more serious than the flu."
