"An astronomical event of great scientific importance will occur today when the planet Venus crosses the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This event, called a transit of Venus, last occurred in 1882, so no one alive today has ever observed it!
Such a transit is of great importance because it allowed astronomers in the past to measure the distance between the Sun and the Earth, and to determine the real size of the entire Solar System.
Would you like to make a drawing of the Transit of Venus to be placed at the Gallery?
